Can modafinil help with Nofap? Can the “limitless” super drug help you beat your addiction to beating off while watching people have sex? There aren’t a lot of scientific studies out there just yet, but the evidence so far says it might.
Modafinil is a “smart” drug taken to boost mental performance that’s commonly used in Wall Street and by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. The Bradley Cooper film “Limitless” is heavily implied to be inspired by modafinil. It’s slowly but surely gaining attention for use in Nofap. The general consensus among the Nofap community is that it will shoot you in the foot (not literally), it’s dangerous, and you shouldn’t use it.
I briefly talk about modafinil for beating porn addiction in my first nofap blog post. When I started my nofap journey, I didn’t know about modafinil. In hindsight, I think that it wouldn’t have made much of a difference.
Here’s my modafinil guide where I go over what it is, how to use it, and how to buy it.
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent. It’s prescribed to treat sleep disorders like narcolepsy and sleep apnea. It’s also unofficially used to boost mental performance.
In practice, it’s basically super caffeine without the jitters and anxiety. It gives you the energy, focus, and even creativity of 10 cups of coffee, with none of the jitters or “wired” feeling. It may be the closest thing to a magic pill out there, but it won’t magically turn you into Elon Musk or Steve Jobs.
Now, how exactly does modafinil help with Nofap?
Modafinil has been shown to treat conditions similar and related to porn addiction, namely ADHD. That’s why it holds such promise for helping with Nofap.
Guys deeply addicted to porn and masturbation often have ADHD symptoms. These symptoms go away after some time on Nofap. The usual medications prescribed for treating ADHD are Adderall and Ritalin.
Adderall and Ritalin are stimulants that work similarly to caffeine in that they stimulate your central nervous system, put you in a high state of stress and cause your body to create more of the neurotransmitter dopamine. ADHD is believed to be caused by lack of dopamine. So then, getting more dopamine into your system by taking stimulants will treat ADHD. At least, that’s what conventional scientific wisdom says.
Dopamine is responsible for feelings of motivation and enjoyment. It’s what made the prehistoric caveman enjoy food and feel motivated enough to leave the safety of his dwelling to hunt down animals. It’s what makes the student feel good when he aces an exam and feel motivated enough to study for many hours over several days to prepare for more exams.
Dopamine deficiency is believed to cause ADHD symptoms. These symptoms include difficulty paying attention, a dissatisfaction and boredom with everyday life, and the need to act out and/or do crazy, dangerous things to feel any sense of excitement, enjoyment, or stimulation.
Modafinil acts as a dopamine-uptake inhibitor, which means it makes dopamine last longer and be more effective. Modafinil doesn’t forcibly increase dopamine levels like Adderall, Ritalin, or even caffeine. This forced dopamine increase is the reason why you feel wired and awake, then feel a huge energy crash after the stimulant wears off. Modafinil doesn’t do that. There’s no energy crash after it wears off. This alone makes it more useful for Nofap than these stimulants. Porn addiction wreaks havoc with your dopamine levels, and modafinil doesn’t further mess with dopamine like stimulants do.
Also, a forced dopamine increase only treats ADHD symptoms temporarily. You need to continue taking it long term. Even if you don’t have ADHD, this forced dopamine increase is the key reason why these stimulants are so addictive. Humans are naturally drawn to things that raise dopamine.
This is all great for the pharmaceutical industry. Since they’ve got you hooked, they can continue to sell the medication to you again and again indefinitely.
ADHD is often misdiagnosed. And just because you have ADHD-like symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have ADHD. Building on that, Ritalin and Adderall are more heavily regulated than modafinil. You can only really get it from a licensed doctor’s prescription. Consequently, there’s almost no anecdotal evidence on ideal dosages since not enough people are using it. And since ADHD is often misdiagnosed, Adderall/Ritalin prescriptions are likely to be way too high.
I’m not saying you should disobey your doctor’s orders. I’m simply presenting the facts. Your doctor is still a human being, and there’s still a chance that they can make mistakes. All I want is for you to be aware, cautious, do as much of your own research as you can to check up on your doctor’s orders.
But, modafinil is still relatively new. There still aren’t very many scientific studies out there on modafinil, especially on its long-term effects. But, the studies so far conclude that there’s very low potential for addiction or abuse.
There is one reported case of modafinil abuse, so it’s not like it NEVER happens. But keep in mind, the medical professionals who wrote the study even admit that it’s a very rare occurrence (link).
Also, the patient in the study chose to take about 6 full modafinil tablets a day prior to his admission into the treatment facility. He was diagnosed with various sleep and mental disorders even before getting his modafinil prescription. A physical exam revealed that all his vitals were within normal limits, aside from some minor tremors. His modafinil dose was gradually tapered down over a 1 month period, and this basically made most of his sleep and mental issues go away.
So, it’s safe to say that modafinil, like any drug, can be abused, and there are consequences for abusing it. But compared to Adderall/Ritalin, the consequences don’t seem quite as severe.
One more thing. Modafinil isn’t as strictly regulated as Adderall/Ritalin, and is easier to acquire. That means there’s a lot more anecdotal evidence out there, both on Reddit forums and on blogs, such as mine :).
You can easily research what the ideal modafinil dosage should be. If you do want to try modafinil, I personally recommend:
50 mg if you’re under 150 lbs. 100 mg if you’re over 150 lbs and it’s your first time taking it. Take it with a heavy meal. Try not to ever exceed 200 mg, or one full tablet, in a single day. For guys on nofap, take it 1-2 times a week, never on consecutive days, and on a bi-weekly basis. And after about three months of doing this, I recommend going without modafinil for at least a full month, if not three months. Most other users and medical professionals will either recommend the same dosage or even slightly higher.
Short answer: yes.
There definitely is a feeling of weakness and helplessness from relying on a drug to accomplish your goals. There are also health risks, financial issues from continually buying the drug, and the potential for addiction.
I go over some of the risks of taking modafinil in my modafinil guide. Now, modafinil is still relatively new and there aren’t a TON of scientific studies on it. But, the scientific studies that ARE out there, the plethora of anecdotal evidence on Reddit, the admittedly rare instances of abuse, and the fact that it’s actually over-the-counter in some countries, all point to it being a relatively low risk drug. But, the fact still remains…
So then, what is the best way to use modafinil for NoFap?
Modafinil offers two solutions to helping with NoFap: a short-term and a long-term solution.
I wrote two other articles on internet detoxification and how it can help with Nofap. Internet detoxification means not using the internet for entertainment purposes. That means no YouTube, no Netflix, no Hulu, no social media, and certainly no pornography. There’s two reasons why internet detoxification helps with Nofap:
First reason. Let’s be honest: there’s a lot of smut out there on the internet. Social media has legions of women posting pictures of themselves wearing bathing suits, skimpy clothes, or nothing at all sometimes. YouTube video thumbnails are the same. And that’s not even getting into porn websites, which literally have thousands of hours of documentation on the human reproductive process.
But, let’s say you aren’t expelling your life fluids into a napkin while watching glorified prostitutes debase themselves on camera. Let’s also say that you’re able to avoid all the smut on social media and YouTube. You’re still dulling your mind and chipping away at your willpower.
Second reason, prolonged time watching TV, YouTube videos, Netflix/Hulu, even social media to an extent, has a negative effect on your brain. Your brain exhibits alpha brain waves during these activities, which correspond to low-intensity brain activity. Scientific studies have proven this (link) (link).
In this state, you’re much more suggestible and easily influenced. Your willpower, awareness, and presence of mind are dulled. This is useful for advertisers, since you’re much more likely to want to buy shit that you see advertisements for.
Your brain literally rots from the TV, YouTube videos, Netflix/Hulu, and social media. Your mind dulls, and it becomes harder to stay on Nofap. Commit at least three days out of the week when you don’t go to these websites at all and don’t watch any television.
But, it’s difficult to all of a sudden stop watching TV, YouTube and going on social media, even if it’s only three days a week.
Take modafinil first thing in the morning with a heavy breakfast. Stay busy throughout the day. If you have the entire day to yourself, get a book and read as much of it as possible. On modafinil, you’ll have such an intense laser-like focus, you could probably read all of it in that one day. I recommend Mastery (Amazon), by Robert Greene.
The next day, do another internet detox, this time without modafinil. Finally, do one more day that week, without modafinil. If you can’t do it, try again the next day with modafinil.
You should try to do an internet detox every week, but only take modafinil like this on a bi-weekly basis. That means that after you take it 1-2 times in week 1, don’t take it at all in week 2.
Modafinil should never be a crutch. It should be used to get an early glimpse of long-term Nofap benefits. It’s one thing to read about millions of guys’ benefits and life-changing experiences on NoFap. But, that has nowhere near the motivational effectiveness of experiencing them for yourself, even if it’s only for about a day.
The laser-like focus. The complete elimination of brain fog. The world becoming more colorful and vibrant. The newfound physical might and stamina. All of that will come to you, just as it has for me and thousands of other guys on NoFap. Modafinil lets you experience all of that for a brief time early on in your journey.
You shouldn’t be thinking to yourself: “NoFap is so easy when I’m on modafinil! Keep taking it!” This is a dangerous line of thought that easily leads to addiction.
And more importantly, it’s not true. You’ll never have long-term success in anything, NoFap included, if you don’t learn to work and change yourself for the better. Modafinil just gives you more motivation by letting you briefly experiencing what the end result of Nofap success feels like.
All right, now let’s go over some other risks of using modafinil.
There’s a slim chance that you’ll develop a minor rash from taking it, which goes away after you stop taking it. There. That’s the solution.
There’s also a slim chance that you’re unusually sensitive to modafinil. There’s no way of knowing for sure until you try it. So, you just need to be smart about it:
And lastly, modafinil can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control for women. It has no reproductive effect on males. So women reading this, don’t have sex during a week when you’re taking modafinil. Or, have your partner use a condom.
All right, so here’s my verdict:
All the best,
